Projects

The new plant (capacity: 490 MWe) to be constructed will be the most modern combined cycle power plant (CCPP) in Poland. It will be equipped with a F-class gas turbine with a heat recovery steam generator and a steam turbine.

Following the construction, the exhausted coal-fired boilers Żerań CHP Plant in Warsaw will be taken out of service and the new generating unit will allow increasing the electricity generation in the CHP Plant by approximately 80 percent. The plant parameters will allow maintaining generation capacity at a level ensuring heat supply to the Warsaw district heat system while retaining heat prices competitiveness for the inhabitants of Warsaw.

The consortium Mitsubishi Hitachi Power Systems EuropeGmbH (MHPSE), Budimex S.A. and TécnicasReunidas, S.A., is setting up a highly efficient lignite power plant for Polska Grupa Energetyczna (PGE) in the mining and generation complex at Turów (Poland).

The lignite unit will have a gross capacity of just under 500 MW and an efficiency of over 43 %. As such, the plant will rank amongst the most modern in Europe. MHPSE is to supply the utility steam generator, the entire flue gas cleaning equipment, piping, turbine /generator, the overriding instrumentation & control and will place the power plant into service. Consortium partners Budimex S.A. (Poland) and Técnicas Reunidas,S.A. (Spain) are responsible for construction/erection, the cooling tower, general electrical engineering, steel structures, ducts and some balance-of-plant.

The units to be built on an existing power plant site on which six power plant units with 1,500 MW of installed capacity are located. The symbolic ground-breaking ceremony for the power plant took place in May 2015.

The new Unit V will be located in North-Western Greece, at the old, exhausted "Komanos " mine, approximately 4 km from the existing SES Ptolemais and 8 km from the town of Ptolemais.

ΤΕRΝΑ S.A. being the EPC contractor is responsible for the design, engineering, supply, manufacturing, construction, testing and putting into operation of Unit V of SES Ptolemais, fired with pulverized lignite and capable to generate 660 MWel gross power, and to deliver thermal power 140 MWth for district heating.

The project's total duration is 70 months. The agreement between TERNA and PPC was signed in March 2013.

The new project will contribute to:

  • The renewal of installed plants of PPC.
  • The production of electricity at competitive costs (less lignite consumption, lower CO2 cost, etc.).
  • The significant improvement of the environmental footprint.
  • The lower cost of electricity generation and overall significant benefits for the Greek economy

Medupi is a greenfield coal-fired power plant project located west of Lephalale, Limpopo Province, South Africa. The name “Medupi” is a Sepedi word which means “rain that soaks parched lands, giving economic relief”. The power station will be the fourth largest coal plant in the southern hemisphere, and will be the biggest dry-cooled power station in the world. The planned operational life of the station is 50 years.

The new power station will comprise of six units with a gross nominal capacity of 800MW each, resulting in a total capacity of 4 800 MW. Construction activities commenced in May 2007, with the first of the six units of the power plant planned for first power by the end of 2014.
